What Types of Steel Are Used in Shipbuilding?
For shipbuilding specifically, there is another type of steel called Arctic D. This special grade is formulated to hold strong even in extremely low temperatures and is often used for icebreakers.
GL Grade E Shipbuilding Steel Plate Description:
GL grade E steel is a kind of hot rolled general tensile strength steel. The GL E grade steel plates have yield strength of 34,100 psi (235 MPa), and ultimate tensile strength of 58,000 - 75,500 psi (400-520 MPa). GL steels come 4 grades in ordinary-strength steel for shipbuilding and grade E is the highest one of them.
GL Grade E shipbuilding Steel Application:
GL E grades of Steel Plate are almost exclusively used in the Shipbuilding Industry for the construction of structural parts of ships, barges and marine equipment. GL E Shipbuilding steel plates also can be used for ship repairing, the offshore oil drilling platform, the platform pipe joints and other components. The grade E steel is certified by GL –Germanischer Lloyd.
